PE Pipe Advantages

With only four months left in 2019, you may be thinking about upgrading your pipe solution to polyethylene (PE) for 2020. If you’re on the fence, consider some of the following advantages of this durable, flexible pipe.

With a density of 0.93 and 0.96 g/cm3, PE pipe weights little to nothing. On top of that—and something we’ve mentioned several times before—the pipe provides excellent resistance to rust and corrosion. With these qualities, there is a broad array of chemicals that can be used with this pipe, along with the peace of mind of knowing the pipe will remain intact.

PE pipe is flexible and installation is simple. Even in cold weather, it can still be bent which expedites installation. Furthermore, it can accommodate most irregularities and once it is installed, the pipe can last for numerous decades before needing to be replaced. Maintenance is minimal, which lowers the cost of upkeep.

Fusing PE pipe is a simple process which, combined with its flexibility, creates a cost-effective and robust solution which can be used for multiple purposes.

Streamline the Fusion Process

The ideal environment for Polyethylene (PE) pipe is one where the temperatures stay at about 41 degrees Fahrenheit. While you can perform electrofusion welding operations at temperatures below 41 degrees, you may run into trouble ensuring there is no moisture, which is vital to stave off contamination. During the PE pipe welding process, time is highly critical. A maximum of thirty minutes should go by once scraping is done, or else the risk of pipe oxidation is amplified. PE pipe that has oxidized will not weld properly.

As for electrofusion fittings, it’s best to keep them in their bag until it’s time to weld. Fittings that have been removed from their bag for over thirty minutes may experience oxidation. Oxidation may happen in an unsuccessful joint, which means a potential loss of time and money.

If you’re worried your pipe may be ruined because of the exposure to the harsh ultraviolet rays of the sub, you may wish to look into the groundbreaking Fusion-Tech UV Black Piping by aquatechnik NA. This fusible polypropylene pipe has UV protection built into it which provides maximum pressure handling and temperature capabilities.

The Evolution of HDPE

Modern polyethylene pipe has become a robust and exceptionally reliable solution utilized in multiple industries for an extensive range of applications. Have you ever been curious about how this versatile pipe evolved? Let’s dive a little deeper into the history.

It was 1933 during the month of March that two organic chemists joined forces to create the material we all know today as polyethylene. The pair were testing a multitude of distinct chemicals and created a white, waxy substance that would play an integral role in the development of polyethylene.
The white substance was a result of the testing of benzaldehyde and ethylene and how they reacted to each other. The container the chemists were using to test began to leak, resulting in an escape of pressure. The white substance would go on to bear a considerable resemblance to plastic. By the end of the decade, the material was patented and was being used.

During the 1950s, polyethylene transitioned into what most people know as high-density polyethylene, also by its common HDPE acronym. This development was a result of the work of German chemist Karl Ziegler. By the mid-1950s HDPE was not being used in pipe production. Ziegler’s work would earn him the prestigious 1963 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

What Pipe Solution Works Best?

A key goal of industrial piping is to ensure long term durability and efficiency. That partially means making sure to use pipe that is able to resist abrasion and corrosion and will not allow for leaks. With so many factors to keep in mind, which industrial pipe works best?

Iron pipe is typically used for transporting sewage and water. Its strength is better than thermoplastic pipe but it can corrode and it may be considered pricey. To protect the pipe, a polyethylene wrap is worth looking into as it can help with corrosion.

Lightweight, strong, and durable are a trio of adjectives frequently used to describe high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe. This type of pipe is used in scenarios involving telecommunications, water main, and more. The flexibility makes it useful in installations that are trench-less and it can resist corrosion. However, it is susceptible to hydrocarbons and you may need to choose something like Fusion-Tech UV Black Piping to ensure the pipe can withstand the effects of ultraviolet rays.

PVC and RCP pipe are other options to look into.

More Advantages of PE Pipe

We’ve previously mentioned how useful HDPE pipe is when it comes to its strong corrosion resistance and durability. There are other advantages that make the pipe worth considering for your next job if the circumstances allow it. Let’s explore a few of these.

Ease of installation and maintenance. Because polyethylene (PE) pipe is so flexible, installing it is an easy task. Even if the weather conditions outside are cold, there is little hassle involved in PE pipe installation. On top of that, the pipe can last for several decades, as long as 100 years in some cases. That means there is less of a need to replace pipes, saving time, money, and resources.

Joining systems. The design of PE pipe means it’s practically made to be joined through electrofusion or butt welding as opposed to having to rely on flanges or mechanical fittings. If you already have a fusion machine, this can potentially make the pipe fusion process that much easier.

Environmental friendliness. PE pipe is made of a recyclable type of plastic which can be performed via a triage process. Knowing that the pipe can be recycled and reused for future projects is definitely something to be proud of.

Is Your Machinery Equipment Worth Purchasing or Renting?

Machinery equipment is a major investment that requires factoring potentially thousands of dollars into your budget. Depending on your needs, you may be wondering whether it’s better to purchase the equipment or rent it out. Let’s explore some considerations to help you make an informed decision.

The convenience versus the cost. Will you benefit in the long term from purchasing the equipment outright? Keep in mind that should you decide to purchase, there will more than likely come a time when you’ll need to do some maintenance or possible repair work on the machine to ensure its proper upkeep.
The level of usage. How often will you be using the machinery equipment? Will you and/or team use it enough to justify its price tag? Maybe renting it for the few times you may need it would work better for your budget if the machine isn’t going to receive a lot of usage.

Location usage. Do you perform a lot of work in other areas beyond your local area? Putting it mildly, shipping a machine can cost a pretty penny, and it can add up if you frequently travel. Renting as needed may help with saving money.

Myths About HDPE Pipe

HDPE pipe has long been praised for its flexibility, resistance to corrosion, durability, and numerous other qualities, which collectively have made it a prime tool for outdoor or buried pipelines. As with any proven technology, however, there are myths surrounding it that you may unintentionally believe are true.

For starters, mechanical joints can indeed be used for buried applications. There is a misconception that these types of joints do not have the same performance as a fused joint, but with right fusion, they can perform well.

Speaking of fusing, while it does remain the well-established standard when it comes to reliability and strength, it’s worth remembering that the strength and integrity of the joints are dependent on several factors including the person performing the joint fusion. Weather conditions, the possibility of surface contamination, all of these may affect the joint. If another method works better than fusing for your purposes, don’t be afraid to use it. The fusion process is also one that is incredibly effective yet takes time. Again, several variables may affect the process such as weather that may force the cooling process to take longer than it normally does.

Do you have pipe fusion needs? We have the equipment to help you take care of the job.
