HDPE Pipe and Butt Fusion 101

HDPE is a pipe material often used for applications such as water distribution and transmission, and it continues to gain further adoption. Among its benefits, its strong resistance to corrosion and rust is a major plus which allows the pipe to last for as long as 100 years in some cases. The pipe material means it can also stand firm against ground shifts, pressure surges, and intense turns in temperature.

Just as important is how HDPE is joined by leak-free heat fusion, a process also known as butt fusion. The process involves heating the ends of the pipe and pressurizing them together. This allows melted materials to combine which alters the molecular structure going from crystalline amorphous. Upon cooling the pipe, the molecules go back to their original state resulting in a massive system of pipes.

Butt fusion machines can work with 1⁄2″ CTS up to 2000 mm OD, making them highly flexible machines. The smaller manual machines with separate heater and facing components are usually lightweight enough to be moved across each joint. Self-propelled or with wheels, tracked vehicles can have mounting options for larger machine carriages. The tracked fusion machines feature all necessary components including an on-board generator.

While manual machine pressure is typically done by hand, the larger hydraulic-powered machines present a specified gage pressure using a mathematical formula that takes into account the type of machine, specification, pipe size, wall consistency, interfacial pressure, and other factors.
