Pipe Fusion Basics

Are you familiar with the different types of fusion? Having an understanding of what they are and how they differ is essential in knowing which one works best for you.

Butt welding, for example, is done in several different ways. It involves heating a pair of planed surfaces (usually polyethylene) against a heated surface. After a predetermined amount of time, the removal of the heating plate allows the pieces to cool and form, also known as welding.

And then there is socket fusion which differs from butt-welding by heating plates of a custom-shape and size instead of a basic flat surface. This allows for greater surface contact, cutting down on the time required to heat and fuse the pipe. This method also uses less pressure than butt welding and is often used for smaller pipe sizes.

Other methods of fusion include sidewall fusion and electrofusion. The latter is used to join HDPE and other plastic pipes using specialized fittings.
