HDPE pipe has long been praised for its flexibility, resistance to corrosion, durability, and numerous other qualities, which collectively have made it a prime tool for outdoor or buried pipelines. As with any proven technology, however, there are myths surrounding it that you may unintentionally believe are true.
For starters, mechanical joints can indeed be used for buried applications. There is a misconception that these types of joints do not have the same performance as a fused joint, but with right fusion, they can perform well.
Speaking of fusing, while it does remain the well-established standard when it comes to reliability and strength, it’s worth remembering that the strength and integrity of the joints are dependent on several factors including the person performing the joint fusion. Weather conditions, the possibility of surface contamination, all of these may affect the joint. If another method works better than fusing for your purposes, don’t be afraid to use it. The fusion process is also one that is incredibly effective yet takes time. Again, several variables may affect the process such as weather that may force the cooling process to take longer than it normally does.
