New Rules for Pipe

Plastic pipe has grown in use and in various pipelines since it began to be widely used in the 1970s, particularly in modernizing distribution infrastructure. As it evolves, so has its reliability and integrity. For close to a decade, the federal agency known as the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has been inundated with requests to make some modern rules regarding pipe for purposes of safety and compliance, and it has finally happened.

The new PHMSA rules make a series of changes. For starters, the new rules increase the design factor of polyethylene (PE) pipe. Additionally, standards have been changed and made more stringent regarding plastic fittings and joints. Furthermore, there are additional requirements intended to reduce contact with underground utilities and structures.
